PANAJI: As part of the 63rd Liberation Day celebration, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that the State government would honor the 14 first legal heirs of Goan martyrs in the freedom struggle.
Speaking to a press conference at his Altinho official residence, the Chief Minister said that on the eve of Liberation Day, the legal heirs of martyrs would receive a certificate and Rs 10 lakh.
According to him, up to 74 people gave their lives in the Goan independence movement, and the legitimate heirs of 14 of them have been found. They will be honored at a special event on December 18 at the Assembly Complex in Porvorim.
He claimed to have already paid a visit to the family of Martyr Karnail Singh Benipal in Ludhiana, Punjab, and given Charanjeet Kaur, the martyr’s spouse, a cheque for Rs 10 lakh as one-time financial support.
Bala Raya Mapari from Bardez, Basavraj Hudgi from Bidra, Karnataka, Sheshnath Wadekar from Nashik, Maharashtra, and Tulshiram Balkrishna Hirye from Kolaba, Maharashtra, are the other martyrs whose legal heirs will be honored. Sakharam Laxman Narayan Velingkar from Veling, Ponda; Keshavbhai Sadashiv Tengse from Canacona; Yeshwant Sukha Agarwadekar from Oxel, Siolim; Ramchandra Nevgi from Bicholim; Yeshwant Shirodkar from Ekoshi; Rohidas P Mapari from Assonora; and Parshuram Srinivas Acharya from Poinguinim.
According to the Chief Minister, the martyrs were instrumental in Goa’s liberation movement and generations of Goans have been inspired by their courage, selflessness, and commitment to the cause.
