PORVORIM: Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant clarified that the only obstacle delaying the construction of the Tribal Bhavan is a legal dispute over land ownership. Two Scheduled Tribe (ST) community associations have staked claim to the land allotted for the project, and the matter is currently before the court, he said.
“There is a legal issue pertaining to the Tribal Bhavan. Apart from that, there is no other issue as far as the government is concerned,” Dr. Sawant told reporters.
The Tribal Bhavan, envisioned as a dedicated facility to support the development and welfare of Goa’s tribal communities, has been in the pipeline for some time. However, the land ownership conflict has caused a delay in the start of construction.
The Chief Minister assured that the government is awaiting the court’s decision and remains committed to moving forward with the project once the legal matter is resolved.
The Goa Cabinet has approved the transfer of 2,400 square metres of land for the construction of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Bhavan at Porvorim, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant announced on Tuesday.
The Bhavan is proposed as a dedicated facility to commemorate the legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and serve as a cultural and community centre for Scheduled Caste (SC) communities and other socially disadvantaged groups in the state.
“The Cabinet has cleared the proposal to transfer the identified land to the concerned department for setting up the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Bhavan,” Dr. Sawant said.
He added that the government is committed to the upliftment and empowerment of marginalised communities through such infrastructure projects.
The proposed site is located in Porvorim, near the State Legislative Assembly complex.
The Bhavan is expected to include a multipurpose hall, library, conference rooms, and other facilities for educational and social activities.
This approval marks a significant step toward fulfilling a long-standing demand of the SC community in Goa.
