SANCOALE: As part of the 30-day awareness campaign on drug abuse titled “Drug Menace to Society”, initiated by the Goa State Legal Services Authority, the District Legal Services Authority conducted an awareness session at the BITS Pilani Goa campus to address the rising drug menace in society, particularly among the youth.
The programme was organised with the objective of educating students on the legal, health and social consequences of drug abuse and the importance of prevention and early intervention.
Judge Nilima Shrikant Kankonkar, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, South Goa, Margao, addressed the gathering and emphasised the role of awareness, legal literacy and community participation in combating substance abuse. She highlighted the legal implications of drug-related offences and urged students to remain vigilant and responsible.
PSI Siddesh Naik, along with his team from the Verna Police Station, interacted with students and shared insights on law enforcement efforts to curb drug trafficking and abuse, while also encouraging youth to cooperate with authorities and report drug-related activities.
Dr Sneha Pokle, Psychiatrist at Tele-MANAS, South Goa District Hospital, spoke on the psychological impact of substance abuse, signs of addiction and the availability of counselling and mental health support services. She stressed the importance of seeking timely help and breaking the stigma associated with mental health issues.
Dr Meenal Kaushik, Dean of BITS Pilani Goa, was also present during the awareness programme and reiterated the institute’s commitment to promoting a drug-free and healthy campus environment.
The session witnessed active participation from students and formed part of the District Legal Services Authority’s sustained efforts to sensitise youth and society against the growing threat of drug abuse.
