PANAJI: The death of Chandru Gaonkar, a lineman from Morle in Sattari, while on duty has triggered a political storm in Goa, with the Congress accusing the ruling BJP government of “criminal negligence” and “systemic murder.” Gaonkar’s colleague, Sarvesh Gaonkar, was also critically injured in the incident and is currently battling for his life.
In a strongly worded statement, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Amit Patkar squarely blamed the BJP-led state government and its Electricity Department, alleging repeated failures to provide frontline workers with basic safety gear and supervision.
“This is not just an accident. This is cold-blooded murder by negligence,” Patkar said. “The blood of these workers is on the hands of the BJP Government of Goa.”
Patkar criticized what he described as a pattern of neglect and indifference toward the safety of linemen and other public service employees, accusing the BJP of prioritizing photo-ops over the welfare of workers. “While BJP ministers enjoy air-conditioned offices, our linemen are electrocuted and left to die without accountability,” he stated.
The GPCC has demanded:
1. A high-level independent inquiry with criminal liability fixed on those responsible.
2. Immediate and adequate compensation for the deceased and injured.
3. Strict enforcement of safety protocols and proper equipment for all electricity workers.
4. An audit of departmental safety measures and accountability from the Power Minister.
“The people of Goa demand a government that protects—not one that kills through neglect,” Patkar concluded.
The state government has yet to issue an official response to the Congress’ demands
