PANAJI: The Department of Transport (DoT) has directed that all public service vehicles be equipped with or fitted with Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTD) and one or more emergency buttons by November 30 this year.
“An operator of a public service vehicle can purchase the vehicle location tracking device and emergency button from any vendor, provided that the device and button comply with AIS-140 standards,” Director of Transport Polumatla P. Abhishek, IAS, declared in an order.
According to the directive, the OEM dealer, approved dealer, or producer of the VLT device must install the devices in public service vehicles and update the device details on the VAHAN portal in relation to the vehicle number.
A notice released in this regard states that any vendor that complies with AIS-140 specifications is eligible to sell the tracking device and emergency button. Before, the government had stipulated that only certain suppliers may be used to purchase the devices.
The ruling further specifies that until November 30, 2024, sufficient time will be given to enable the fitting and repair of broken buttons and devices.
All public service vehicles will be required to have an operational emergency button and vehicle location tracking device from this date; compliance with this requirement will be examined during the vehicle fitness checks.
All public service cars will be required to have an operational emergency button and vehicle location monitoring device after the deadline, and these vehicles’ fitness inspections will verify that compliance is being met.
