CANACONA: The Loliem-Polem Communidade has welcomed the Goa Regularisation of Unauthorised Construction Bill 2025, saying it will provide long-awaited relief to hundreds of local families residing in houses built on Communidade land.
Addressing a press conference in Canacona, Communidade President Vishwajit Warik, Attorney Bhushan Prabhugaonkar, Treasurer Madhav Prabhu Shastri, and two assistants said the bill would ensure that only locals benefit, as no outsiders have encroached upon Loliem-Polem Communidade land.
“We took a meeting of our Communidade and passed a resolution supporting the government’s decision. These houses belong to our own villagers. If it fits within the law and the Communidade Code, all such houses should be regularised. We will extend full cooperation so that maximum villagers are benefited,” said Warik.
Explaining the implications, he noted that only the plinth area up to 300 sqm, along with two metres around the house, will be regularised. Any excess land encroached upon will be reverted to the Communidade through the Collector, with compensation paid for the regularised portion.
Attorney Prabhugaonkar said the amendment would finally bring relief to villagers who have lived in constant fear of demolition. “It is not right to demolish people’s houses. This initiative will protect locals and at the same time return encroached land to the Communidade. We wholeheartedly welcome this move,” he said.
A past survey by the Mamlatdar in 2002 had recorded around 291 houses in the Madditolop area alone, most belonging to locals. The Communidade leaders urged all affected residents to take advantage of the bill and regularise their homes and land at the earliest.
