PANAJI: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Thursday raised issue of Fish meal Pollution, Hazardous waste and encroachment by industrial units in Sociedade land in Cuncolim.
“The attention of the House is drawn to the issue of grave and escalating civic and environmental crisis due to the pollution in Cuncolim Industrial Estate and its surrounding areas because of untreated water released by fish meal plants in open areas. The Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) of the fish meal units are not in working conditions resulting in untreated discharge posing threats to health and contamination of sources of water. There is fear and anxiety due to approvals to additional fish meal plants outside the industrial area,” Cuncolim MLA said.
“Further, heaps of hazardous waste dumped at different locations in the industrial estate and vicinity poses risks to life, safety and security, more particularly during monsoon as the hazardous materials contaminate nearby streams and water bodies. It was assured in the House that the hazardous waste would be removed by September 2025, but there is no action.” He said.
“Also, there is fear and anxiety due to one M/s Shirdi Steel Private Limited Company encroaching land of Sociedade in Cuncolim for its extension and despite Civil Suit is pending before court in regards to ‘lease and default of payment’, the said company is carrying out work illegally.” he said.
