Panaji: Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao on Friday raised serious concerns in the Goa Legislative Assembly over the alleged wrongful arrest of two Kerala-based Catholic nuns by Chhattisgarh Police on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion. The complaint had reportedly been lodged by a local right-wing activist.
Alemao pointed to a disturbing trend of “private policing” gaining ground in BJP-ruled states, stating that minorities remain vulnerable to targeted harassment based on fake and frivolous complaints. He demanded a firm assurance from Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant that such acts of minority harassment and right-wing appeasement would not be allowed in Goa.
In response, CM Sawant maintained that Goa, which follows the Uniform Civil Code, ensures equal rights for all communities and asserted that no injustice had taken place against minorities in the state. He cautioned against bringing issues from other states into Goa’s legislative discussions.
