Panaji: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has demanded the immediate reinstatement of around 84 workers retrenched by Sesa Resources Ltd. (Vedanta) at its Surla-Sonshi mining site. Raising the matter during Zero Hour in the Goa Assembly, Alemao criticised the move as unjustified, especially when the state is pushing for the revival of mining operations.
“In a suddenly summoned meeting with the workers’ union, company officials declared the retrenchment,” Alemao informed the House. He pointed out that the matter is already in the High Court, which had issued a stay on an earlier retrenchment order, and said the latest action was taken just three days before a scheduled hearing on July 29.
Alemao questioned why mining companies are continuing with job cuts despite the government expressing confidence about resuming full-scale mining activity. “If the government is committed to restarting mining, why are workers being let go?” he asked.
Responding to the issue, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured the House that his government would look into the matter and take steps to resolve the workers’ retrenchment.
