CUNCOLIM: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the Goa Police over the recent dacoity at a doctor’s residence in Ganesh Puri, Mapusa, terming it a clear sign of police failure and deteriorating law and order in the State.
Alemao said it was “shocking” that such incidents were taking place in thickly populated areas, attributing it to the police’s negligence and poor night patrolling. “Police have failed to prevent crimes, robberies and dacoities. I have been repeatedly raising the issue of police not conducting Nakabandis. Now, after the dacoity, they have started intercepting vehicles with out-of-state registrations. Will the dacoits wait after committing crime?” he questioned.
The Opposition Leader alleged that the police force had grown complacent and unprofessional. “The professional conduct of police is deteriorating, and lethargy has entered the department. They should have learnt lessons from the past dacoity incident in Dona Paula. Robberies, dacoities, murders, rapes and gang wars have become a routine affair in Goa,” he stated.
Criticising the police’s much-touted surveillance initiative, Alemao said, “When Goa Police launched Project Netra (CCTVs), it was projected as a comprehensive surveillance system for crime prevention. But all these projects and plans have failed.”
He added that criminals often flee across State borders while the police remain “Susegaad.” “There is absolutely no fear of police among criminals,” Alemao said, demanding that Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant clarify on the government’s failure to curb rising crimes.
“At least now, don’t boast about case detections — you have failed in preventing crime,” the Opposition Leader asserted.
