Panaji: Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Yuri Alemao launched a sharp attack on the Goa government, accusing it of evading responsibility in the wake of the Birch Fire tragedy that claimed innocent lives.
Alemao said the victims lost their lives “for no fault of their own,” yet the government remains unwilling to accept accountability. “There is no law and order in Goa; only land order is in effect,” he alleged, claiming governance has been reduced to facilitating land and profit-driven interests.
Criticising a project titled “Diffraction”, Alemao alleged that it was conceived purely for financial gain. He demanded transparency, stating that it is crucial for the public to know “who is producing it, who is directing it, and who is acting in it,” hinting at vested interests behind the initiative.
The LoP also raised serious concerns over environmental degradation, remarking that Panaji has earned the dubious tag of a “Sin City” and the “City of Casinos.” He pointed out that nearly 50 per cent of Goa’s rivers are polluted, alleging widespread neglect by the authorities. “No one cares—not even the government,” Alemao said, accusing the administration of turning a blind eye to ecological damage while prioritising commercial interests.
Alemao reiterated that the government must be held accountable on issues of public safety, environmental protection, and transparency, warning that continued inaction would further erode public trust.
