New Delhi: An Indian LPG carrier transporting more than 46,000 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas is expected to dock at Mundra Port on Monday after successfully passing through the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz. The arrival of the vessel is expected to help stabilise domestic LPG supplies amid concerns over disruptions caused by tensions in the region.
The vessel, named Shivalik, had safely moved into open waters after transiting the narrow maritime corridor linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. Officials said the ship is currently being escorted by the Indian Navy as it continues its journey towards the Indian coast.
Another LPG carrier, Nanda Devi, has also successfully exited the Strait of Hormuz and entered open sea. The movement of both vessels is seen as a significant step in ensuring the safe transport of energy cargo to India during a period of heightened tensions in West Asia.
The safe passage of these ships followed sustained diplomatic engagement between India and Iran aimed at securing unhindered transit for Indian flagged vessels through the vital shipping route. Several LPG carriers had earlier faced delays in the Persian Gulf after maritime traffic was disrupted due to the ongoing conflict in the region.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier spoken with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, emphasising the need to ensure the safety of Indian nationals and maintain uninterrupted movement of essential goods and energy supplies.
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most critical maritime chokepoints in the world, handling nearly 20 percent of global oil and gas shipments. Any disruption in the route has significant implications for global energy markets and for countries heavily dependent on imports.
As India relies substantially on Middle Eastern LPG supplies, the safe arrival of cargo vessels such as Shivalik is crucial for maintaining cooking gas availability and safeguarding the country’s energy security.
