New Delhi: The fallout from the Asia Cup 2025 final has escalated into a fresh standoff between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman and PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, after the trophy and winners’ medals remained in Naqvi’s possession days after the title clash.
Naqvi admitted during an ACC meeting on Tuesday that he felt “made to look like a cartoon” when the Indian team declined to receive the trophy from him at the post-match ceremony. He said he was left standing awkwardly on the podium, expecting to hand the silverware to captain Suryakumar Yadav and his side.
The BCCI has strongly objected to Naqvi retaining the trophy and medals in his Dubai hotel room, insisting they be placed in the ACC office and dispatched immediately to the Indian team.
“Rajiv Shukla and Ashish Shelar clearly told Naqvi that the trophy must be returned. It belongs to the winning team, not an individual,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying. “If the matter isn’t resolved, we will escalate it to the ICC.”
Naqvi, however, reportedly avoided giving a direct answer, saying only that the issue should not be discussed during the ACC annual general meeting. The meeting, originally convened to elect a Vice-Chairman, was adjourned without resolution.
The dispute has added another layer of tension between the two cricketing boards, with the BCCI insisting on its “legitimate right” to the Asia Cup trophy, while Naqvi maintains that he was unfairly sidelined during the ceremony.
