Margao: Senior advocate, Opinion Poll movement stalwart and former Margao MLA Adv. Uday Bhembre on Monday described Madganvcho Awaaz’s initiative to commemorate 60 years of the historic Opinion Poll through year-long activities as timely and meaningful. He said such initiatives, unlike one-day events that are soon forgotten despite huge expenditure, should be planned in a way that they become lasting milestones for future generations.
Adv. Bhembre was speaking after unveiling the commemorative poster of Asmitai Vars, organised by Madganvcho Awaaz to mark 60 years of the 1967 Opinion Poll. Youth leader Prabhav Naik and social worker Dattaraj Pai Fondekar were present on the occasion.
Highlighting the significance of sustained engagement, Adv. Bhembre noted that the Opinion Poll was a defining moment in Goa’s history and deserved remembrance in a manner that educates and inspires successive generations.
Speaking on the occasion, Prabhav Naik expressed pride in carrying forward a rich legacy associated with the Opinion Poll movement. He said he was honoured to continue the contributions of his great grandfather Narcinva Naik and grandfather Anant alias Babu Naik, whose roles in the historic movement are well recognised. Naik added that Madganvcho Awaaz will continue to honour eminent Goans who have contributed to safeguarding Goa’s identity, language and culture.
As part of the launch of Asmitai Vars, Madganvcho Awaaz honoured living stalwarts of the Opinion Poll movement by personally visiting their residences and presenting them with a memento, shawl, bouquet and a plant as a mark of respect and gratitude.
Those honoured included Adv. Uday Bhembre, Prof. Shyam Verencar, Smriti Audi, Aruna Telang, N. Shivdas, Sadanand Kanekar and Tomazinho Cardozo, all of whom played significant roles in the historic movement that shaped Goa’s destiny.
The honoured stalwarts appreciated the efforts of Prabhav Naik and Madganvcho Awaaz in remembering and honouring the architects of the Opinion Poll movement, and expressed confidence that the year-long Asmitai Vars observance will inspire the younger generation to understand, value and protect Goa’s unique identity and heritage.
