Margao: Madganvcho Awaaz and Youth Leader Prabhav Naik have written to the Chief Minister of Goa and Chairman of the Entertainment Society of Goa, Dr. Pramod Sawant, urging the Government to organise a special commemorative programme in Margao on 25th August 2025 to mark the conclusion of the birth centenary year of renowned Goan cinematographer of international acclaim, K. Vaikunth.
Born in Margao on 25th August 1925, Vaikunth Kuncolienkar, popularly known as K. Vaikunth, is regarded as one of the most accomplished cinematographers in Indian cinema. His work on the iconic Hindi film Seeta Aur Geeta earned him the prestigious Filmfare Award and widespread admiration across the film industry. Over the course of his distinguished career, he was honoured with the President of India Medal and several national and state-level recognitions.
Despite his remarkable contribution and deep Goan roots, there has been a glaring absence of any official commemoration of his centenary year in the state. A proposal to honour him during IFFI 2024 did not materialise, and Ravindra Bhavan, Margao entrusted with the responsibility of promoting Goan art and culture — has failed to organise any tribute in his honour throughout the centenary year, stated Prabhav Naik in his letter.
Madganvcho Awaaz has therefore appealed to the Government to organise a special screening of Seeta Aur Geeta, accompanied by a cultural programme in Margao on the evening of 25th August 2025, as a fitting tribute to K.Vaikunth. The letter further suggests that the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) be entrusted with curating this tribute in collaboration with local cultural bodies and stakeholders.
“This is a moment to correct an unfortunate oversight and to proudly celebrate the life and legacy of a son of Margao who brought global recognition to Goa through the medium of cinema,” said Prabhav Naik. “It is not only a tribute to a master cinematographer, but also a reminder to honour Goan excellence in every field.”
Madganvcho Awaaz has assured full cooperation to the Government in ensuring the success of the event and expressed hope that K. Vaikunth’s legacy will finally be recognised with the dignity and respect it so richly deserves in his birthplace.
