ANJUNA: In shocking incident, a group of villagers from Anjuna, who had gone to complaint against the pubs playing loud music till morning hours, were allegedly attacked by the goons hired by those clubs.
The incident occurred last night, when the villagers approached Anjuna police station to file complaint against violation of noise pollution and authorities failure to act.
The villagers, disappointed with police inaction, were left shocked on their return home to see the club goons, who later attacked them.
Vagator local lad Ashley Fernandes, part of a group that went to Anjuna police station to protest the loud music being played, after Sunburn stopped their music at 10 pm, was assaulted by alleged goons of a night club and a police complaint was filed at Anjuna Police station early Saturday morning.
Ashley’s complaint states, “I kindly request you to please help for the safety of my life and register an immediate FIR against Mr. Austin.”
Ashley was among the ten irate residents who had earlier complained to the Anjuna Police Station about music being played after 10 p.m. for the second time in a row.
If the locals used candlelight to protest the first time, their attempts were completely destroyed by the commotion that followed the performance on the second day of Sunburn.
During the show, Anjuna Police Station staff members received a deluge of complaints about cell phone thefts; by approximately 11 p.m., over 1420 cases had been reported.
The letter submitted to Anjuna police station at 00.50 hours on 30-12-2023 read: “We are very upset that in spite of being present at the police station and bringing it to the PS notice they are unable to stop the ongoing music at Banana Forest.”
“We have waited for more than an hour for the PI and have not got any result, neither met him. Kindly note we going to stop the loud music at the venues and you will be held responsible for any action,” concluded the letter signed by nine locals residing in the vicinity where loud music could be heard till 6 am of December 30.
It seems that the police believe that Sunburn is the only place where noise pollution regulations apply, based on the way loud music is permitted to be played. One of the signatories, Desmond Alvares, expressed dissatisfaction, saying, “Loud music is being played everywhere and despite registering a complaint there is no effect.”
“This is my second visit to file a complaint, and both times the police have openly ridiculed us. They just do not seem to care or are well looked after by the violators of the law,” lamented Sophia D’Souza.
