New Delhi: Maharashtra has announced a pioneering agreement with Elon Musk’s Starlink, becoming the first state in India to formally partner with the global satellite communications company. The decision marks a major step toward expanding high speed internet access in some of the state’s most remote regions.
The partnership was confirmed through a Letter of Intent signed between the state government and Starlink Satellite Communications Pvt Ltd. Under the arrangement, Starlink will deploy satellite based internet services for government offices, rural communities and essential public infrastructure across areas that currently face unreliable or limited connectivity.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the initial rollout will prioritise districts such as Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Washim and Dharashiv, where terrain and distance have long posed challenges for traditional broadband networks. He described the collaboration as a milestone for Maharashtra and welcomed Starlink’s entry into the state.
Starlink operates a vast constellation of low earth orbit satellites that provide high speed internet access across geographically difficult zones around the world. Officials believe the service will support more inclusive digital development by improving access to online education, health services, e governance platforms and emergency response systems.
The agreement fits into the broader Digital Maharashtra mission, which aims to integrate advanced technology into various state programmes, including electric mobility, coastal development and climate resilience initiatives. Authorities said that adding satellite internet capability will strengthen the state’s digital backbone and open new possibilities for innovation in rural development.
Fadnavis said the partnership positions Maharashtra at the forefront of satellite based digital infrastructure in the country. He noted that the project supports the national Digital India initiative and reflects the state’s ambition to build a future ready technology ecosystem.
State officials are expected to work closely with Starlink on deployment plans, site assessments and phased service activation in the coming months.
