Maharashtra: In the backdrop of growing tensions over the contentious issue of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb, Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has been placed under high alert. The city is bracing for potential agitations and maintaining peace during upcoming festivals. This comes as prohibitory orders have been issued, highlighting the deep-seated societal tensions tied to historical legacies in India.
In a move to ensure law and order, Police Commissioner Pravin Pawar has implemented prohibitory orders effective from March 25 to April 8. This decision was prompted by the fervent demands from right-wing organizations to remove Aurangzeb’s tomb, located at Khultabad in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. The period coincides with significant events such as the death anniversary of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, Gudi Padva festival, Eid, Jhulelal Jayanti, and Ram Navami.
The orders strictly prohibit the assembly of five or more persons without permission, effectively banning large gatherings or processions. Additionally, there is a complete ban on carrying any weapons during this time, and activities like sloganeering and the use of high-volume speakers have been disallowed. These measures aim to preempt any potential conflicts and maintain public order amidst heightened tensions and agitations anticipated over the tomb controversy.
