PANAJI: A man from Maharashtra has been sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment by the North Goa Additional Sessions Court after being found guilty of possessing over a kilogram of ganja in the state capital.
The accused, Vinod Chawan, a resident of Pandarpur, was arrested on November 11, 2017, near Panaji market with 1.10 kg of cannabis in his possession. The case was probed by then-Police Sub-Inspector Arun Dessai, who is now serving as a Police Inspector.
Following a detailed trial, the court held Chawan guilty under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Along with the prison sentence, he has also been directed to pay a fine.
The judgment highlights the firm stance taken by the judiciary in narcotics cases and reinforces the commitment of Goa’s law enforcement agencies to combat drug-related crimes. Authorities said the ruling sends a clear message against illegal drug activities in the state.
