VASCO: Deweeding of overgrown weeds and removing hyacinth in the Maimollem lake is ongoing in full swing. The lake will be developed into a tourist attraction, and the Sewerage line and two sewerage pumping stations will be set up in the low-lying areas of Maimollem and Mestawado.
Recently, the Tourism Minister of Goa, Rohan Khaunte, along with the Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar and Councillors of Mormugao Municipal Council, held a site inspection of the Maimollem lake.
During the inspection, the minister expressed his willingness to develop the existing Maimollem lake into a tourist attraction in Vasco to boost the Port town’s tourism.
MMC councillor Girish Borkar said that the Maimollem lake will be developed into the best lake to attract tourists from all over. Some years ago, the farmers cultivated this area; some of them were our grandparents. Once this lake is cleaned and developed, there could be a possibility to introduce cycle boating and other recreational activities here.
When questioned about the sewage and dirty water being released by some residential structures into the lake, Borkar said that a few years back, some residential colonies, houses which are near this lake and located in the low-lying area, were directly releasing their sewage into the lake and the nullah.
He further added that three years ago, MMC had also served notices to some residential structures for releasing their dirty water directly into the lake and nullah.
“Now we will provide a proper sewerage line to the low-lying areas so they can release their sewage into this line. We have also made a letter to the South Western Railway requesting to build the nullah at Mestawado, or else we will build it. The lake will have fresh water once the nullah is built and the Sewerage line is put up. MMC will also set up two sewage pumping stations at Maimollem and Mestawado-Orulem areas shortly” Borkar said.
