MAINA CURTORIM: In light of a recent surge in criminal incidents such as dacoity, house thefts, robbery, and chain snatching, the Maina Curtorim Police have issued a comprehensive advisory to enhance public safety and community vigilance within their jurisdiction.
The initiative focuses on strengthening home security, personal safety, neighbourhood watch efforts, and cyber awareness. Police have urged residents to secure all entry points with sturdy locks and bolts, ensure adequate exterior lighting — particularly near entrances and parking areas — and install motion-sensor lights to deter intruders. Overgrown shrubs and trees near homes should be trimmed to eliminate potential hiding spots for criminals.
Citizens have also been encouraged to install CCTV systems and visible security signage, which can act as a deterrent. Police advised against keeping large amounts of cash or valuables at home and recommended using bank lockers instead. Verification of domestic help, tenants, and security guards has been stressed as a key preventive step, along with informing neighbours or police when leaving home for extended periods.
To reduce the risk of robbery and chain snatching, residents have been cautioned against wearing heavy or flashy jewellery, especially when walking alone or in less crowded areas. Police advised people to keep bags and purses close to their bodies and on the side away from the road, avoid carrying large sums of cash, and remain alert to their surroundings.
A senior police officer said community cooperation plays a vital role in maintaining safety.
“We encourage residents to form or join neighbourhood watch groups and promptly alert police about any suspicious person, vehicle, or activity. Victims of theft or crime should immediately lodge a complaint and provide documents or photos of stolen items to aid investigations,” the officer stated.
Police also highlighted the increasing threat of cybercrime, warning the public not to share sensitive banking details such as account numbers, OTPs, or PINs via phone, email, or SMS. They advised residents to avoid clicking on unknown links or pop-ups, verify payment requests through official company channels, and ensure that online transactions are made only through secure ‘https://’ websites.
The public has also been warned against fraudulent job offers and online scams, particularly those demanding advance payments. Any cases of cyber or bank fraud should be reported immediately to the concerned bank and the Cyber Crime Police Station.
Police described the initiative as a “comprehensive guide to citizen safety,” urging people to stay vigilant and proactive.
Local resident Laximan Naik welcomed the advisory, saying that community participation is essential for crime prevention.
“Police patrolling is important, but public awareness and cooperation make a real difference in ensuring security,” he said.
