PANAJI: Maina Sports Club advanced to the semifinals of the Simon Barreto Memorial inter-village football tournament after a gripping match against UC Seraulim. The decisive encounter, which ended in a 1-1 draw, was resolved through a penalty shootout, with Maina Sports Club emerging victorious with a 5-4 score. The goals in regular time were scored by Selroy Fernandes for UC Seraulim and Edwin Sequeira for Maina Sports Club.
The match, held on Friday at the DYSA ground in Curtorim, was a testament to the teams’ determination and skill. Selroy Fernandes opened the scoring for UC Seraulim in the 5th minute, but Edwin Sequeira equalized for Maina Sports Club in the 28th minute, just before halftime. Despite numerous attempts, neither team could break the deadlock, and the game remained tied at 1-1 until the final whistle.
The penalty shootout that followed was intense, with Maina Sports Club converting their penalties through Joywin Carneiro, Savio Peixoto, Caitano Viegas, and Nickson Castanah. UC Seraulim’s successful penalty takers were Ashley Fernandes, Keith Rodrigues, and Floscio Fernandes. However, it was Maina Sports Club’s precision that ultimately secured their place in the semifinals.
Dickson Braganza of UC Seraulim was declared the Man of the Match, an award presented by Josse Fernandes. This match was significant as it determined the semifinalist in the tournament, highlighting the competitive spirit and skill of both teams.
