Telaulim: Maina Sports Club secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ambelim Sports Club in the UCT trophy 9-a-side intervillage football tournament organized by UC Telaulim and played at Government school ground Telaulim on Monday.
It was a fast and attacking brand of football as both teams were hungry for goals but couldn’t break the deadlock. In the 10th minute of play, Anslem Fernandes of Maina was well feeded by Jovial Martin and he ran down and shot from the edge of the box which hit the crossbar and went out of play then a counterattack was created by Ambelim as goalkeeper took long ranger which was well control by Velroy Fernandes and gave diagonal pass to Arvind Fernandes but Maina goalkeeper Prakash Joshi punched his attempt away and both teams were tied 0-0 at lemon break.
Changing over it was Ambelim SC had the golden opportunity to take the lead as Asfin’s shoot was misjudged by maina defence and in one to one situation Arvind of Ambelim took control and only goalkeeper was at his mercy but his shoot well saved by goalkeeper Prashant and denied scoring opportunities. The Maina created a move through Crizenal and Anslem and feeded unmarked Milagres Fernandes who took the ball and placed into the net beating goalkeeper in the 45th minutes of play .
Ambelim wasted many chances to level terms but failed to hit the target and in the dying minutes of the match again Ambelim SC got opportunity to find the equaliser as a footer from right wing by Asfin landed in front of Arvind who took powerful shoot which was cleared from the goalmouth by Maina defence Manuel Castanha and referee Rohan Pereira then blow final whistle to declared the end of the match
