New Delhi:
In a proactive measure to counter the escalating threat of terrorist infiltration, the Border Security Force (BSF) has initiated a comprehensive anti-tunneling operation along a 33-kilometer stretch of the International Border (IB) with Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir. This operation, which began several months ago, is a response to intelligence inputs indicating a heightened risk of underground tunnels being used for cross-border infiltration.
The BSF has identified vulnerable areas in Jammu, Samba, and Kathua, regions that have historically seen instances of tunneling attempts by terrorists. To address this, the force has dug anti-tunneling trenches in a 25-kilometer area, with plans to complete the remaining 8 kilometers within the next two months. These trenches, approximately 4 feet wide and 10 feet deep, are designed to prevent the construction of underground tunnels.
“The project was initiated ahead of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, given the historical presence of tunnels in these areas,” a senior BSF official explained. “Equipped with advanced machinery and technology, our personnel are ensuring that no tunnel can be dug to facilitate terrorist infiltration.” The last significant tunnel was discovered in 2022 in Samba, which included oxygen pipes and was located close to the Pakistani border.
In addition to the anti-tunneling measures, the BSF has also enhanced surveillance and security protocols. This includes the deployment of anti-drone systems to counter illicit drone activity, following the recovery of 257 drones last year from the Indo-Pakistan border. Additional battalions have been inducted to maintain robust control over the depth areas of the Jammu Frontier.
The BSF is also developing lateral and axial roads to improve operational and administrative movement of troops. A press statement highlighted the installation of a New Design Fence (NDF) for border security, along with CCTV/PTZ and bullet cameras in vulnerable areas to enhance surveillance.
India shares a 3,323 km land border with Pakistan, and the BSF’s efforts are part of a broader strategy to secure this border against various forms of infiltration and smuggling.
