VERNA: A major fire broke out at the Verna Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) area today afternoon, reportedly at a scrapyard, sending thick plumes of dark smoke into the sky.
The exact cause of the blaze is yet to be determined. Firefighting teams had been dispatched to the site and are working to bring the flames under control.

Reacting to the incident, MLA Anton Vas demanded that the Government shut down all scrap yards, citing safety concerns and the recurring risk of such fires in industrial areas.
