MUMBAI: A 32-year-old man, an accused in an extortion case filed at the Mapusa police station, fled from Mumbai airport while being transported to Goa by Mapusa police officers, who were escorting him and another co-accused from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, via Delhi.
The police claim that the escape happened early on Wednesday.
The Goa-based businessman was the target of an extortion case filed by Mapusa police, in which the accused pretended to be Delhi drug unit officers and demanded Rs 30 lakh.
Sections 342, 170, 323, 506(2), 389, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code were used to file the offence, and police had already detained Nivedita Sharma and Bhuvan Arora.
Police received information about the whereabouts of additional accused parties involved in the crime during the course of their investigation. In light of this, a four-person police squad set out for Uttar Pradesh, where they were assisted by the local police in tracking down Faizan Khan and Imad Khan in Saharanpur and taking them into arrest.
While Faizan and Imad were being transported to Goa through Delhi, Imad sprinted out of the Mumbai airport and ran away from a police officer who was after him.
After the Goa police team landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport with both of the accused, mad made the audacious escape around six in the morning on Wednesday, according to a police official.
A police complaint filed at the Sahar police station in Mumbai states that Imad fled the airport and got into a car despite a policeman pursuing him. According to a police officer, Imad resisted the policeman’s attempts to remove him from the car, staying inside it during a struggle and made his escape. The Goa police officers filed a complaint against Imad when they were unable to find him.
Mumbai police have taken Imad into custody after filing a case, and they are currently trying to find him. In the interim, Faizan has been brought to Goa and is being held.
