OLD GOA: Police have registered an Unnatural Death case after the body of a 55-year-old man was recovered from the river near Diwar on Thursday morning.
Old Goa Police registered U.D. No. 43/2025 under section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
According to police, a call was received at 9.19 am from PCR Panaji reporting that a person had drowned at Diwar. Officers visited the spot near Devyaa Hotel and found the body of a male floating in the river water at Amboi, Diwar Ilhas.
The deceased was identified as Antony Dmello, 55, son of George Mello, originally from Navpada, Kurla (West), Mumbai, and residing at Vanxim, Diwar Ilhas. His identity was confirmed by his nephew Neville Fernandes, 47, from Porvorim.
Police enquiries revealed that the deceased had been living alone in Vanxim and was a chronic alcoholic. A scene of occurrence panchanama was conducted, and the body was sent to GMC Morgue for preservation. Police said no foul play is suspected, and further legal formalities are being carried out.
