Panaji: A 40-year-old man was arrested in Panaji on Wednesday for allegedly accepting illegal bets in a public place.
Police said the accused, Chhatulal Basant Lal, a businessman from Patto, was caught red-handed around 2.30 p.m. opposite the Bank of India at Patto while accepting bets on numerical figures from members of the public.
Officers seized ₹1,300 in cash, along with other gambling articles, from the spot. The accused was placed under arrest at 4.54 p.m. and released on personal bond with surety at 5.06 p.m. the same day.
The case has been registered under Section 11(2)(a) of the Goa, Daman and Diu Public Gambling Act, and further investigation is underway with Head Constable Rajesh Yeshi of Panaji Police Station.
