Imphal:
In a stark reminder of the ongoing tensions in Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has vehemently condemned the recent indiscriminate firing by Kuki militants in the Imphal East district, which left two individuals injured. This incident has once again highlighted the fragile peace and the persistent clashes between the Kuki tribes and the Meitei community.
On Friday, the militants launched attacks on the villages of Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi, located near the foothills of the region. The firing, which began at 10:45 AM, created widespread panic among the residents, with visuals showing people, including elderly women and children, fleeing in fear amidst the sound of automatic gunfire. A policeman and a civilian were among those injured in the attack.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh took to social media to denounce the attack, emphasizing the need for calm and unity. “Strongly condemn the indiscriminate firing by Kuki militants at Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi in Imphal East, which injured civilians and security personnel. This cowardly and unprovoked attack on innocent lives is an assault on peace and harmony,” he stated.
In response to the incident, adequate security personnel, including Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, were swiftly deployed to the affected areas. The security forces managed to rescue several women, children, and elderly people who were caught in the crossfire. The injured are receiving necessary medical assistance, and the government has urged the public to remain calm and united in the face of such challenges.
The chief minister also stressed the importance of proper coordination between central forces and state police in handling such situations. This latest incident is part of a broader conflict that has seen over 250 people killed and nearly 50,000 internally displaced, with the Kuki tribes seeking a separate administration and the Meiteis pushing for inclusion under the Scheduled Tribes category.
