Imphal: More than 19,000 people have been impacted and over 3,300 homes damaged as severe flooding grips Manipur following days of relentless rainfall. According to officials, the crisis has been triggered by overflowing rivers and breaches in embankments across the state.
Worst-Hit Areas and Relief Efforts
The most affected regions include Imphal East district, particularly the Heingang, Wangkhei, and Khurai assembly constituencies, as well as parts of Senapati district. The state has established 31 relief camps—mostly in Imphal East—to shelter displaced families.
In total, 3,365 houses have been reported damaged, with 19,811 people affected in the past four days. Forty-seven landslides have also been recorded, adding to the devastation across different parts of the state.
Infrastructure and Health Facilities Inundated
Floodwaters breached embankments in areas like Khurai, Heingang, and Checkon, submerging many localities, including parts of Imphal city. Several key establishments, such as the All India Radio Imphal complex and the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), were also affected. Patients in the JNIMS female orthopaedic and surgery wards had to be relocated after floodwaters entered the premises.
Personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local clubs, and volunteers collaborated to evacuate affected patients.
Army and Assam Rifles Rescue Hundreds
Indian Army and Assam Rifles troops played a vital role in rescue operations, saving nearly 800 people, including elderly and differently abled individuals, from submerged areas. Quick reaction teams were deployed in Porompat, Wangkhei, Sanjenthong, New Checkon, and other severely affected parts of Imphal East.
Governor Visits Flooded Areas
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, accompanied by Chief Secretary PK Singh and senior officials, visited flood-hit zones such as Kangla Nongpok Thong and Lairikyengbam Leikai to assess the damage. The Iril River in Imphal East crossed the danger mark on Sunday but had not breached embankments at the time of reporting.
In response to the ongoing crisis, the Governor announced the extension of summer vacation in schools located in Imphal East, Imphal West, and Senapati sub-division until further notice.
Calls for Declaration of State Calamity
Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has urged the Governor to officially declare the flood crisis a “state calamity” to enable the deployment of broader institutional resources and support.
Meanwhile, Manipur Congress President Keisham Meghachandra Singh criticized the state’s water resources department for failing to complete flood protection projects. He claimed that several vulnerable areas remain at risk due to unfinished retaining walls, further worsening the disaster’s impact.
Authorities continue to coordinate across departments to ensure timely relief and rehabilitation for affected communities.
