Guwahati: In a pivotal move to stabilize the violence-torn state of Manipur, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla convened a crucial security meeting at the Raj Bhavan. This strategic gathering follows Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s directive to ensure free movement on all roads in Manipur starting March 8, a significant step toward normalizing life in a region ravaged by ethnic violence since May 2023. The conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities has left deep scars, with over 250 lives lost and 50,000 displaced. As the state navigates this challenging period under President’s Rule, the focus is on restoring peace and order.
Governor Bhalla’s security meeting was attended by senior officials, including Chief Secretary PK Singh, Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, DGP Rajiv Singh, and top military and paramilitary leaders. This meeting was a follow-up to a high-level review in New Delhi led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on March 1. Shah’s directive to open all roads is a bold move, given the current division of the state into Meitei-dominated valleys and Kuki-controlled hills, where travel has been severely restricted.
Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh amid escalating unrest. The ethnic violence has been fueled by issues such as land rights and political representation, highlighting the need for a comprehensive solution. The Centre’s multi-pronged strategy includes recovering looted arms—over 4,100 weapons have been surrendered—and dismantling drug networks to restore order.
Additionally, the Centre is prioritizing the fencing of the Indo-Myanmar border to curb illegal cross-border activities linked to the unrest. This approach reflects a shift toward centralized control, sidelining local political factions to prioritize security and reconciliation. As March 8 approaches, the success of these efforts will depend on enforcement and community trust, crucial elements in paving the way for lasting peace in Manipur.
