PANAJI: FC Goa head coach Manolo Marquez has expressed strong faith in midfielder Ayush Dev Chhetri, highlighting his intelligence, composure, and adaptability, especially during the team’s successful Super Cup campaign. Despite facing criticism and setbacks, Chhetri has emerged as a key figure under Marquez’s guidance.
Marquez described Chhetri as one of the most unfairly criticised players in Indian football. “Ask his teammates about him, and they will tell you the same. He thinks faster than most players in the country, and you always want someone like him in your team,” the coach said.
Chhetri’s performance in the Super Cup final against East Bengal demonstrated why Marquez places such trust in him. Despite a red card in the AFC Champions League Two, the coach opted for the young midfielder over more senior options. Chhetri controlled the midfield effectively, distributing the ball, maintaining possession, and competing strongly against an experienced overseas midfield trio, helping FC Goa secure a hard-fought victory.
Marquez highlighted Chhetri’s ability to adapt to the pace of the game. “Some critics say he is not strong or good in the air, but he is fast, intelligent, and rarely loses possession,” he noted. The midfielder’s composure, positioning, and quick decision-making have made him a vital part of FC Goa’s tactical setup.
Chhetri has also benefited from playing on the continental stage against teams like Al Nassr, Al Zawraa, and Istikol. Marquez emphasized his ability to read situations, release the ball quickly, and create opportunities, reinforcing the coach’s confidence in his young midfielder.
By relying on Chhetri in key matches, Marquez has demonstrated his commitment to nurturing talent while allowing young players to thrive under pressure. The midfielder’s pivotal role in FC Goa’s Super Cup triumph underscores his growing stature and potential to become one of India’s top midfielders.
