CANACONA: The Second Sanjiv Prabhudesai Kaalotsav at ManoShobha Kalaghar will commence with the staging of the acclaimed English play ‘A Place with the Pigs’ in Canacona.
The two-hour production is directed by Goa’s eminent theatre personality Dnyanesh Moghe and features performances by Daegal Godinho and Deeplakshmi Moghe.
Written by renowned South African playwright Athol Fugard, the play is based on a true story and was first premiered in the United States in April 1987. The narrative follows the life of Pavel Ivanovich, a Russian soldier who deserts the battlefield during World War II and spends an astonishing 41 years hiding in a pigsty to escape punishment.
The play presents a poignant, and at times humorous, exploration of themes such as personal dignity, the psychological scars of war, moral conflict, and the human quest for acceptance within society.
A Place with the Pigs will be staged at the Aangan of ManoShobha Kalaghar, Agas, Loliem, Canacona, on Sunday, 11 January, at 5.30 pm.
Prior to the performance, the Kaalotsav will be formally inaugurated by Anand Waghurmekar, a theatre and folk artist from Ponda Mahal, who is also an engineer by profession.
Informing about the festival, ManoShobha Kalaghar Secretary Sudesh Prabhudesai stated that beginning this year, the Kaalotsav will be hosted throughout the year, featuring theatrical productions in multiple languages, thereby strengthening the cultural and theatrical landscape of South Goa.
