MAPUSA: In a bid to ease traffic congestion and reclaim vital public parking space, the Mapusa Traffic Cell has issued a stringent directive targeting rent-a-car and rent-a-bike operators in the town.
Effective immediately, all rental vehicles must be parked exclusively in designated parking zones. Violations will invite strict penalties, including heavy fines and possible suspension of operating permits.
The directive comes amid a spike in public complaints over unregulated parking by rental operators, which officials say has worsened traffic bottlenecks, particularly in central areas and during peak hours.
“This is part of a broader effort to restore order and improve access to Mapusa’s public spaces,” a senior traffic official said. “We’ve received several complaints from residents who are unable to find parking due to the misuse of public slots by commercial vehicles. It is essential that operators realise the larger impact of their actions.”
To ensure compliance and spread awareness, traffic personnel have begun making public announcements at key locations such as the Mapusa market and taxi stand junction. Simultaneously, officials are engaging directly with rental business owners to stress the importance of following the new regulations.
The designated parking areas for rental vehicles have been clearly marked and will be subject to regular patrols. Any vehicle found outside these zones will be towed, and the operator may face administrative action.
“This initiative is not just about enforcement but also about sustainable urban mobility and planning,” the official added. “Our goal is to streamline traffic flow, especially in high-footfall areas frequented by both locals and tourists.”
The move has been welcomed by local residents, who called it a “long-overdue step” towards addressing Mapusa’s chronic parking woes. The traffic cell has stated that the initiative will be part of an ongoing monitoring program to ensure long-term effectiveness.
