MAPUSA: Shops at the Mapusa Municipal Market remained closed today as traders observed a shutdown to protest the unresolved rent dispute with the Mapusa Municipal Council. A large number of shopkeepers downed shutters and staged a demonstration, urging authorities to address their long-pending grievances.
The agitation stems from concerns over rent arrears and the proposed revision in fees, which traders claim has created uncertainty for small businesses operating in the market. Protesters said the issue has been pending for a considerable period despite repeated representations to the civic body.
Following the shutdown, traders gathered and marched towards the municipal council office, calling for immediate intervention and clarity on rent calculations and payment terms. They also appealed to local representatives to step in and facilitate a solution acceptable to all stakeholders.
Leaders of the trading community stated that they are not opposed to paying dues but want a fair and transparent mechanism before any recovery is initiated. They warned that continued delays in resolving the matter could lead to further agitation.
While most shopkeepers in the main market participated in the shutdown, several fish, vegetable and roadside vendors continued their operations, resulting in partial activity in and around the market area.
