MAPUSA: Aldona Congress MLA Adv. Carlos Alvares Ferreira has come down heavily on the Goa government after a large section of the false ceiling at the Peddem Indoor Stadium collapsed, exposing what he alleged to be shoddy work and possible misuse of public funds.
Ferreira, who inspected the site late Monday evening, demanded a full-fledged inquiry and strict accountability for the incident.
“I demand that there be an inquiry into this and that it be restored. If it is the contractor’s fault, the repair should be done at the contractor’s cost and the money recovered. If not, then the government must identify who is responsible and where the money has gone,” Ferreira told reporters.
The MLA expressed shock that the ceiling — part of the renovations carried out for the National Games — had collapsed so soon after the work was completed. “This was supposed to be of good quality with significant money spent. Instead, it shows poor quality, siphoning of funds and commissions,” he alleged.
Calling for regular inspections of sports facilities, Ferreira warned that the incident could have caused serious injuries if visitors were present. “Children, parents and sports enthusiasts come here. You cannot wake up only after an accident. This is people’s money, and accountability is non-negotiable,” he said.
Ferreira has urged newly appointed Director of Sports Ajay Gaude to personally inspect the stadium and “fix accountability at the earliest.”
