MAPUSA: A 26-year-old man tragically lost his life on Thursday afternoon after drowning in the Tillari canal near the water treatment plant at Cunchelim.
The deceased has been identified as Omkar Prabhudesai, a resident of Altinho, Mapusa. According to sources, Omkar had gone for a swim in the canal along with a friend. He reportedly jumped into the water but did not come back to the surface.
His friend immediately alerted nearby residents and informed the police and fire department. A rescue operation was launched by the Mapusa fire services team, with support from locals, and Omkar’s body was later recovered from the canal.
The Tillari canal, part of the Tillari Irrigation Project, has previously been flagged for safety concerns, with multiple drowning incidents reported over the years.
This latest tragedy highlights the dangers of swimming in unsupervised water bodies. Authorities have initiated an inquiry into the incident and have once again advised the public to avoid swimming in such areas without proper safety measures.
Further investigation is underway.
