CANACONA: The Marathi Rajbhasha Nirdhar Samiti on Tuesday called on Mathadish Shrimad Vidyadhish Teerth Swamiji of the Gokarn Partagal Math, submitting a memorandum seeking due recognition for Marathi as an official language of Goa alongside Konkani.
The delegation included State Convenor Principal Subhash Velingkar, guide Go. Ra. Dhavalikar, Central Advisory Board member Divakar Shinkre, Umesh Prabhudesai Boruskar, Abhay and Vasudev Khanvate, and Satish Vyankatray Bhat.
During the 45-minute interaction, Swamiji held an in-depth discussion with the group on the status of the Goa Official Language Act and the obstacles that have prevented successive governments from granting Marathi official language status. He also examined practices in other states that recognise multiple official languages and spoke about Goa’s linguistic heritage and the need to safeguard cultural roots to prevent moral and social decline.
The meeting was marked by an open and positive exchange of ideas. Swamiji assured the delegation that the Gokarn Math would continue to support initiatives aimed at preserving cultural identity. He said that appropriate steps would be taken to help ensure that Marathi, one of the region’s mother tongues, receives fair recognition, and extended his blessings to the group.
The memorandum submitted by the Samiti underscored Goa’s historic Marathi tradition, the language’s role in education and public life, and its enduring cultural presence dating back to the Portuguese era. It urged the government to take necessary action to accord Marathi the status of an official language along with Konkani.
