Panaji: A delegation from the Marathi Rajbhasha Nirdhar Samiti met with Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant at the Secretariat to present a memorandum advocating for official language status for Marathi. Led by Principal Subhash Bhaskar Welingkar, the committee emphasized historical and cultural reasons why Marathi should be recognized alongside Konkani as an official language. The meeting highlighted data showing Marathi’s widespread use in educational institutions, newspapers, public bodies, and other sectors.
The delegation included notable figures such as Margdarshak G. R. Dhaulkar, Pradeep Ghadai Amonkar, and prominent singer Dr. Pradeep Gawkar. They presented comparative statistics on Marathi and Konkani, including the number of newspapers published, enrollment in Marathi schools, and library usage. Additionally, they mentioned resolutions passed by local councils supporting Marathi’s status.
Chief Minister Sawant expressed his willingness to study the matter deeply and consider actions that could be taken. The delegation urged him to take the issue to the central government for further deliberation. They also stated that protests would continue until the demand for Marathi as an official language is addressed.
