SANCOALE: Former Sancoale Zilla Panchayat member Mariano Rodrigues filed his nomination papers on Monday as an independent candidate from the Sancoale constituency for the upcoming ZP elections, marking his return to grassroots politics with a renewed pitch for development and accountability.
Rodrigues, a resident of Sancoale, arrived at the Mormugao Block office accompanied by supporters and submitted his papers before the returning officer. Speaking after the formalities, he said his decision to contest independently stems from his belief that local issues demand “unfiltered commitment rather than political alignment.”
“I have served the people of Sancoale before, and I know their expectations. This time, I want to work without any party pressure so that decisions are taken purely in the interest of the constituency,” he said, adding that voters were looking for a representative “who listens first and acts responsibly.”
He highlighted that key priorities for the constituency include improving internal roads, addressing long-pending drainage issues, strengthening water supply, and ensuring better coordination between panchayat bodies and government departments. Rodrigues noted that several development works had slowed down due to “avoidable delays,” which he promised to rectify if elected.
“My focus will be transparent governance. People are tired of promises; they now want delivery. I am stepping forward with that commitment,” he said.
Supporters at the venue said Rodrigues’ independent candidature would give residents a “clear and people-centric option.” With nominations now picking pace, the Sancoale ZP seat is expected to witness a competitive contest in the coming days.
