New Delhi: A devastating explosion at Iran’s most advanced port has claimed the lives of at least eight people and injured 750 others. The blast occurred on Saturday when several containers exploded at Shahid Rajaee Port, triggering a massive fire. Thick smoke was visible billowing from the port area in videos shared online.
Esmaeil Malekizadeh, a regional port official, confirmed the explosion took place at the Shahid Rajaee dock, located 1,000 kilometers south of Tehran, and said efforts to control the fire were underway. The port, located 23 kilometers west of Bandar Abbas and near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, is a vital hub for Iran’s maritime trade.
In response to the disaster, four rapid response teams were dispatched to the scene, according to Mokhtar Salahshour, head of the Hormozgan Red Crescent Society. Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, the head of the province’s crisis management authority, confirmed that the explosion was caused by the detonation of several containers. Authorities are working to evacuate the injured and transfer them to nearby medical facilities.
The Shahid Rajaee Port is a key facility for Iran’s trade operations, and the incident has raised concerns over its impact on the region.
