Panaji: Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho has defended the government’s decision to regularise houses built on communidade land, stating that the issue is not new and has been previously addressed by the courts.
Reacting to the recent threat by communidade bodies to challenge the government’s move in court, Godinho said, “The courts have already dismissed similar cases in the past.” He added that earlier, communidade components themselves had agreed to the regularisation process.
Godinho’s remarks come in the wake of mounting opposition from several communidades, who claim that the government’s decision infringes upon their rights and land ownership.
The government has recently moved to regularise unauthorised houses on communidade land, a move aimed at providing relief to thousands of settlers, but which has stirred legal and political debate across the state.
