New Delhi: Glenn Maxwell has decided to withdraw from the 2026 Indian Premier League auction, bringing a temporary halt to his long association with the tournament. The Australian all-rounder, who fractured his finger during the 2025 season, was not included in the longlist of players for the upcoming auction.
In a message shared on social media, Maxwell said he chose not to participate in the auction this year, describing the decision as significant and filled with gratitude. He reflected on the opportunities and experiences the league has given him over the years, noting that the IPL played a key role in shaping both his cricketing career and personal growth.
He expressed appreciation for the teammates he played alongside, the franchises he represented, and the passionate supporters who have followed his journey across different seasons. Maxwell said the atmosphere, challenges and energy of playing in India will remain with him and thanked fans for their constant support.
Maxwell’s absence follows a disappointing 2025 campaign in which he managed just 78 runs and four wickets from nine matches before being sidelined by injury. Punjab Kings chose not to retain him for the upcoming season, and he has not registered for the next auction. The 2026 mini-auction will take place in Abu Dhabi, with teams allowed to submit additional names until December 3 and final confirmations due by December 5.
Since his IPL debut in 2012, Maxwell earned the nickname Big Show for his explosive batting. His most productive season came in 2014 when he scored 542 runs, followed by strong campaigns in 2017, 2021, 2022 and 2023. Over the past two years, however, his form has dipped, leading to releases by both RCB and PBKS.
Maxwell is not the only notable absentee. Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali are set to feature in the Pakistan Super League next year, opting out of the IPL auction. Andre Russell, released by Kolkata Knight Riders, has announced his retirement from the IPL and will join KKR’s support staff as a power-hitting coach.
