Shillong: The tragic death of Indore resident Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya has taken a dark turn, with police now treating the case as a premeditated murder. According to top officials, the breakthrough came from a local tour guide’s statement, which shifted the investigation from a missing person’s case to a homicide probe.
Tour guide Albert Pde told police he saw Raja and his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, on May 23 near the Mawlakhiat area—accompanied by three unidentified Hindi-speaking men. This was the last confirmed sighting of Raja. Authorities later validated the sighting through call data records and GPS location tracking, which aligned with Pde’s account.
Albert had initially encountered the couple on May 22, when they declined his services and opted for another guide. He told investigators the couple’s choice seemed unusual and, in hindsight, may have been an intentional move to avoid deeper local interactions and maintain secrecy.
Suspicious Behavior Raises Red Flags
As the probe deepened, police uncovered a series of red flags in Sonam’s behavior. She had arranged the entire Meghalaya trip independently, without informing Raja’s family, and had not booked return tickets—details that raised initial suspicion. Moreover, Raja was reportedly wearing gold jewelry worth over ₹10 lakh, including a chain and ring, both of which were missing when his body was recovered, leading officers to suspect robbery as part of the motive.
Investigators also found extensive communication between Sonam and a man identified as Raj Kushwaha, believed to be her lover. Their exchanges via encrypted messaging apps both before and during the honeymoon suggested detailed planning. Digital forensics revealed that Sonam may have shared Raja’s live location with the accused, enabling coordination during the alleged murder.
GPS data from Raja’s smartwatch and phone showed him in the Wei Sawdong Falls area—where devices belonging to the suspected killers also pinged. Police believe this overlap further confirms that the attack was coordinated, with Sonam playing a central role.
Psychological and Circumstantial Clues
Family members and investigators also pointed to Sonam’s apparent lack of enthusiasm during the wedding, captured in multiple videos. According to Raja’s mother, Sonam was reluctant about the arranged marriage, which was facilitated by the Raghuvanshi Society during a Ram Navami celebration.
Top police officials now claim they have substantial digital, testimonial, and circumstantial evidence to file a chargesheet against Sonam and her alleged accomplice. The case, they say, underscores a chillingly calculated murder, disguised as a romantic honeymoon getaway.
The investigation continues, but authorities are confident the mounting evidence will lead to a conviction.
