CORTALIM: Merciana Vas, wife of Cortalim MLA Anton Vas, filed her nomination papers on Monday as an independent candidate for the upcoming Zilla Panchayat elections from the Cortalim constituency. Her nomination drew significant support from across the constituency, with several panch members and Sarpanchas accompanying her and publicly endorsing her candidature.
Local leaders from various panchayats under the Cortalim segment highlighted their confidence in Vas’s ability to represent the constituency effectively. They said her grassroots connect, accessibility, and involvement in community initiatives had earned her goodwill among residents, making her a popular choice for the ZP seat.
Speaking to reporters shortly after the nomination was filed, Cortalim MLA Anton Vas expressed strong confidence in his wife’s prospects, stating that the people would vote based on her performance and commitment during her earlier tenure. “Merciana has consistently worked for the people, and the public has seen her dedication firsthand. I am confident they will support her once again because of the work she has already done as a ZP member,” he said.
Anton Vas added that his wife’s decision to contest as an independent stemmed from her desire to continue development-oriented work without political constraints. He maintained that the overwhelming support from panchayat representatives reflected the trust she enjoys at the grassroots level.
Speaking to reporters, Merciana Vas thanked the panchayat members and supporters who had gathered in her favour. “I am humbled by the confidence shown in me by people from across the constituency. My focus has always been on addressing issues at the village level, and I will continue working with the same commitment and sincerity,” she said.
With the campaign set to begin in full swing, supporters believe Merciana Vas will focus on strengthening infrastructure, improving civic facilities, and addressing long-pending local issues across the constituency. The Cortalim seat is now expected to witness an active contest as election day approaches.
