Panaji: The controversy over alleged heavy metal contamination in fish off Caranzalem has escalated, with fishermen raising concerns over their livelihoods and government ministers urging a scientific approach.
Fisheries Minister Nilkant Halarnkar stated that the report on the Caranzalem fish pollution issue, including the alleged presence of metals, has not yet been received. “After receiving the report, I will respond. The Caranzalem fishermen have not approached me,” he said.
Speaking on the matter, Minister Babush Monserrate emphasized the need for careful scientific examination. “The Caranzalem fish pollution issue should be studied properly, and people’s fears should not be unnecessarily raised. Experts must examine the matter scientifically. Simply instilling fear in the minds of people is not right. The Fisheries Department should take steps to restore public confidence,” he said.
Meanwhile, local fishermen met with the Fisheries Department, asserting that claims of fish pollution are false. They alleged influence from hotel lobbies and warned of filing a petition in the Goa High Court and organizing a statewide protest if the report is not corrected. Fishermen say the controversy has already affected their livelihoods, as buyers are reportedly avoiding Caranzalem fish.
The government has assured a review once the scientific report is available, while both ministers stressed the importance of evidence-based communication to the public.
