PANAJI: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has recently extended its November 2016 order by two more years, directing District Collectors to conduct a thorough inquiry into the issue of dual citizenship held by Goan residents and to provide suitable recommendations to the Government of India.
This order, issued by the MHA Joint Secretary Prashant Lokhande on October 14, 2024, under Section 16 of the Citizenship Act, requires the District Collectors to investigate the acquisition of citizenship of another country by residents of the State and submit appropriate recommendations to the Union government through the State government.
As per the order, the District Collectors are tasked with inviting applications and objections from citizens after due publicity and conducting the inquiry in a fair and transparent manner in accordance with the provisions contained in the Act and the Citizenship Rules.
Following the inquiry, the District Collectors will be required to make recommendations to the Government of India through the State government, providing details of each case.
This order will remain in force for a period of two more years from October 14, 2024, the date of publication of the notification by MHA, New Delhi.
