SANCOALE: As the Sancoale Zilla Panchayat election enters its decisive phase, political observers believe the sizeable migrant population in the constituency could emerge as a silent but decisive force, potentially working in favour of independent candidate Rajesh Shetty, a businessman, social worker and a prominent Kannadiga leader.
Sancoale is home to a large number of migrant families, particularly from Karnataka, who have settled in areas such as Chicalim, Dabolim, Cortalim and parts of Sancoale village due to industrial linked employment. Over the years, this community has grown into a socially organised and politically aware voter base.
Rajesh Shetty’s long-standing engagement with the migrant community is being seen as a key advantage. Known for his accessibility and involvement in resolving day-to-day issues such as documentation assistance, employment guidance, health support and community welfare activities, Shetty has built strong grassroots connections beyond party lines. His identity as a Kannadiga leader has further helped consolidate trust among migrant voters who often seek representation that understands their language, culture and challenges.
Community members point out that migrants traditionally vote quietly but there is a growing inclination to support candidates who demonstrate consistent engagement rather than election-time outreach. Shetty’s reputation as a social worker and his non-confrontational political approach are said to resonate well with this segment.
In a closely fought contest, even a marginal swing from the migrant community could significantly boost Shetty’s prospects and alter the final result in Sancoale.
