MIRABAG: Agitators opposing the proposed Bandhara at Mirabag-Sanvordem were on Thursday officially handed a government order confirming the project’s cancellation, ending weeks of uncertainty.
The written confirmation comes nearly a week after villagers called off their 49-day continuous sit-in protest, following assurances from Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in a meeting at Margao that the project would be scrapped. Residents had awaited the official order, which the chief minister had promised would be issued within two days.
Upendra Naik, speaking at the handover of the order, expressed gratitude to all who supported the movement, including political parties, social organizations, clubs, activists, the media, local businesses from Curchorem, and citizens from Sanguem, Savordem, and Curchorem. He highlighted the crucial role of women participants in the agitation.
Naik also thanked Chief Minister Sawant for responding to the community’s concerns and resolving the issue, bringing closure to the long-standing protest.
