Sanvordem: A tense situation prevailed at the Sanvordem Panchayat office on Monday after villagers from Mirabag staged a gherao protesting the proposed 50 MLD bandhara project.
Residents from Mirabag and nearby areas gathered outside the panchayat office, raising slogans and demanding that the project be scrapped. Villagers expressed fears that the proposed bandhara could lead to flooding, loss of agricultural land and environmental damage in the area.
Police teams were deployed at the panchayat office as a precautionary measure, with personnel stationed at the site to maintain law and order during the protest.
Protesters questioned the panchayat’s role in supporting the project and demanded that proper consultations be held with local residents before any work proceeds. Many villagers alleged that they were not taken into confidence regarding the proposed bandhara at Mirabag.
The situation remained tense for several hours as villagers surrounded the panchayat office, insisting that officials address their concerns.
Villagers have warned that they will intensify their agitation if the project is not halted.
